" Come ride the mighty Mississippi river with Dr. Morphineus Codeine Shingles as he touts his “Magic Wondrous Healing Oil, the Elixir of Life!” (compounded of questionable ingredients) up and down it's banks. Dr. Morphineus brings with him a band of hilarious entertainers, including his sidekick, Miss Scarlette. Mark Twain joins them and a group of comics, clowns, and performers singing the popular music of the 1800’s and about the river".
This is an original Natchez Little Theatre production written by the Board of Directors in 1975 and has been performed to audiences around the world since 1976.
The play's concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 adventure film The 39 Steps to be performed with a cast of only four. One actor plays the hero, Richard Hannay, an actress (or sometimes actor) plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements, and two other actors play every other character in the show: heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object. This often requires lightning fast quick-changes and occasionally for them to play multiple characters at once. Thus the film's serious spy story is played mainly for laughs, and the script is full of allusions to (and puns on the titles of) other Alfred Hitchcock films, including Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and North by Northwest.
NLT's building fund has been depleted due to the theft of 3 central air conditioning units and the purchase of a new roof. Now wiring from the 1950's needs to be replaced. Please consider making a tax deductible donation to the building fund at our donations page.
